3D Printing Industry is back again with their 3rd annual 3D Printing Industry Awards for 2019. Once again the design competition for the 3D Printing Industry Awards trophy is in partnership with Protolabs.

Protolabs is the world's fastest digital manufacturing source for custom prototypes and low-volume production parts. The technology-enabled company uses advanced 3D printing, CNC machining and injection moulding technologies to produce parts within days.

  • FREE Design for Manufacture, with interactive analysis of your design models within hours
  • Dedicated application engineers to discuss material choice, tolerances and development
  • Complete total solution from prototyping 3D printed parts through to low volume production

  • Once again, Protolabs will be manufacturing the Awards, to be distributed to industry leaders across the globe. This is where you come in...

The winning design will have access to the full capabilities of Protolabs, state of the art, additive manufacturing machinery.

With this in mind, we want you to design a trophy that will celebrate the unique capabilities of 3D printing, whilst pushing Protolabs manufacturing capabilities to the limit.

Features and considerations to include in your design:

  • Lattice Structure
  • Must be designed to be made in two different materials, one part SLA and one part MJF
  • Use of internal channels
  • Incorporate multiple features that are minimum 0.15-0.20mm in size (preferably in the same orientation) for SLA parts.
  • Minimum feature size for MJF parts is 0.75 mm
  • Min/Max trophy size: 75x75x75mm/125x125x125mm
  • Optimised for SLA and MJF

  • Top Tip:

Protolabs can print in translucent/clear material, so think about how you can play with aesthetics, by adding internal cavities and features that will be visible from the outside. Make sure to add a render to your submission to demonstrate your design's internal features.

    Winner:

The winner will receive an Ultimaker 3

In addition, the winning designer will be catapulted to 3D printing stardom, and immortalised through their winning trophy design for the official 3D Printing Industry Awards, in partnership with Protolabs.

    Good luck!

Design a Trophy for the 3D Printing Industry Awards!

The theme of this 3D design challenge is designing a trophy for the 3D Printing Industry Awards, taking place on June 6th 2019 in London, that truly embodies the possibilities of 3D printing, and Protolabs' state of the art manufacturing capabilities.

    Main prize

The first prize for this competition is the amazing Ultimaker 3 . In addition, your design will be used as the official 2019 3D Printing Industry Awards trophy. Also, you will receive your design made using Protolabs advanced manufacturing technology and state of the art 3D printers.

So you want to win a design competition?
Here are some top tips to help you climb up the leader-board:

    1. Think about your design(s) in relation to the brief and how best you might best optimise it for 3D printing.

    2. Make sure you read all the design constraints and download all designer resources so as to ensure you are on the right track.

    3. This year, the company is also looking for unique designs that incorporate both SLA and MJF 3D printing techniques

    4. Once your design is approved, post it on twitter with the tags #3DPIAwards, @MyMiniFactory, @3DPrintIndustry, @Protolabs

    • Read and understand the design brief.
    • Thinkabout how you can best deliver a solution.
    • Use the tips and resources provided
    • Explain the concept behind your design.
    • Presentprint, and photograph your design with care.

Struggling to understand some of the terminology? Fear not, we have provided some basic examples below.
