Description
This is a figurative portrait of Aphrodite (or Venus), the goddess of beauty. The Anadyomene type (from Greek, "Venus Rising From the Sea"), in which she is posed, is one of the iconic representations of Aphrodite, made famous in a much-admired painting by Apelles, now lost. By her side is a putto standing on a dolphin, further supporting the idea of her having just risen from the sea.
