3D Printing Industry Awards Trophy 2019

This is my entry for the 3D Printing Industry Awards 2019.
This trophy was made to represent the insane level of detail and complex geometries 3D printing can achieve nowadays.
But why is this design different from the others?
With this design I really wanted to set it apart from the other designs. I wanted to show what 3D printing nowadays is all about. The craziest design that used to be impossible for manufactures to even fathom are now a reality. I designed this trophy so that the upper part can be printed in SLA. Supports will be needed for the veronai pattern ball, once removed the ball is stuck in place, but it can still rotate inside the trophy body itself freely, creating an interesting feature only 3D printing can achieve nowadays that sets it apart from everything else.
Inside the veronai pattern ball there is another complex geometry. I tried to make it look like there was a vortex wormhole going through the ball, symbolizing the speed at which 3D printing and manufacturing is accelerating. Looking from where 3D manufacturing was 5 years ago it feels like we have jumped through a wormhole , since it feels only so short ago 3D printing was in its infancy.
The lower body will be printed in MJF giving the base a nice matte metal composite look with the Protolabs logo encapsulating it. The light bouncing from the matte grey MJF should bounce through the upper trophy part that will be printed in SLA as one piece.
The two bodies can be merged with a very thin paste of transparant epoxy glue.
In short:
My design is about the mind bending possibilities of 3D manufacturing. If a thin walled veronai pattern ball with another complex shape inside of it that's able to rotate freely within the sculpture doesn't scream the insane advances of 3D manufacturing then I don't know what will.
Here are two videos that show off the Trophy in more detail.
